Sherbet Pronunciation Poll
This came up yesterday while I was at Yale, and I'm really curious if I'm the only one who pronounces this word the way I do, as seems to be the case after yesterday's conversation...

Poll #277161 Sherbet Pronunciation

How do you pronounce the word "sherbet"?

sher-bet
22(21.8%)
sher-bit
10(9.9%)
sher-bert
59(58.4%)
sher-bay
4(4.0%)
other (see next question)
6(5.9%)

If you chose "other" for your response to the previous question, try as best as you can to explain how you pronounce it here.

It's actually written both sherbet and sherbert, so depending on how it's written is how I'll say it.

(Also, was very confused -- before you changed the poll with sher-bitsher-bit... quite a mouthful. ;)

Interesting that "sherbert" is an acceptable alternate spelling... Everyone involved yesterday spelled it "sherbet" when asked but pronounced it "sher-bert"--and because of my adamant stance of it being "sher-bit," they're now all calling me Sherbert for a nickname.

I think it's funny and cute, especially when Alexis was like, "When we finally get you to compete at the comps, we'll chant, 'Go Sherbert!'" XD

And yeah, I don't know why it did that. I was hoping I fixed it fast enough that not many people noticed it. :x

Until today I have only ever seen it spelled "sherbert" and never knew that "sherbet" was even an acceptable spelling of it. :oO

If I had seen "sherbet" on the containers as a child I would be saying it sher-bet today. heee
Melody: mecomeseptember on April 11th, 2004 12:04 pm (UTC)
Interesting! I'd only seen it "sherbet."

And yeah, the reason I don't pronounce it "sher-bert" is because that's not how I'd seen it spelt.
Carolinemoonlitdream on April 11th, 2004 12:16 pm (UTC)
Ditto :) Never knew anyone actually spelled it sherbet. ;)

I say "sore-bay". I voted for "sher-bay" because I figured it was close enough. ;)

Now there's one non-English person who says "sher-bet"! ;)

Sorbet and Sherbet are COMPLETELY different things.
Melody: bunneh eyecomeseptember on April 11th, 2004 03:18 pm (UTC)
Yep, I know. And I'm not asking about sorbet, because I don't know anyone who says "sor-bert"! XP
Shaunaidoru on April 11th, 2004 03:48 pm (UTC)
o_O i have never in my LIFE seen it spelled "sherbert." i pronounced it that way when i was little, till i SAW the word. it's common practice for a lot of people to say "sherbert," but i always want to be like CAN YOU SPELL?! cos to me it's like saying "warsh" instead of 'wash.'

i have no idea about the 'fizzy powder' bit, though i know most basic [like, served at large gatherings] fruit punches involve ginger ale and sherbet?
Melody: daffodilcomeseptember on April 11th, 2004 03:54 pm (UTC)
Yeah, until today, I hadn't seen it spelt that way either! And I have the same reaction as you with the "CAN YOU SPELL?!" thing. Josh admitted earlier to me that he didn't realize it was spelt "sherbet"--but he still insists it's "sher-bert." ;P

Also, I love your very linguistic-y analysis of your pronunciation! I figured I could count on you for a very good response to this. ;D

I really don't know what to pick. My family always said it "sher-bert", so when I was little I called it that. But then I finally saw the container and noticed there was no second "r", and got confused. So, I know the lots of people say "sher-bay", but I just don't call it anything at all because I feel like either way someone will end up laughing at me.

Which is my standard reaction to uncertainties in pronunciation. I also don't call very many people by name, because I'm afraid I'll either have forgotten their name or pronounced it wrong (no matter how long I've known them or how many times I've heard other people call them by that name).
Melody: daffodilcomeseptember on April 12th, 2004 11:12 am (UTC)
Awww. That's cute in an almost pitiful way. :] I tend not to call people by name because it usually just feels awkward.

My name is easy to pronounce, so at least you don't have to worry about saying it wrong. Not that I'd be bothered if you did, lord knows just about everyone calls me anything but Melody until I've corrected them a few times. ;P

No, I don't actually. I would like to get one at some point, though. :) Is there any particular reason why you've asked me? Maybe I can still help you out with whatever it is. :]

Hi!
I saw you in evelynne's journal and had to come check you out because of your user name. My name is September.
=)
Melody: magiccomeseptember on June 3rd, 2004 07:05 am (UTC)
Oh, wow, that's really neat! :D Was there any particular reason why you were named September? It's really pretty as a name!

My username comes from the song "Come September" by Natalie Imbruglia. It's my favorite song, and also my birthday is in September. :)

I teach literacy, and today I had to set a task about sherbet lemons. had to stop and think about the spelling, asked my boss, we both decided it was sherbert and I wrote it in only to find it came up as a spelling mistake. This is why I have looked on this site. Did not realise it was such a big thing!

Melody: thoughtfulcomeseptember on January 20th, 2009 07:54 pm (UTC)
I don't know that it's actually such a big thing--but I'm a stickler for correctness, so I made it a big thing. ;) I'm sure it won't be long before "sherbert" is considered not only an alternate spelling, but the primary correct spelling and pronunciation!

Re: Hey about the name
If it helps you any, I can say that the American word "sherbet" has roots in the French word "sorbet." Maybe that tip will send you down a path that helps with your name history research. :)
